The Terengganu cycling team concluded their medal hunt at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) Sarawak 2024 in spectacular fashion, securing a total of 12 medals: 5 gold, 3 silver, and 4 bronze, in the Land of the Hornbills.
This remarkable achievement crowned Terengganu as the overall champions in cycling for the 21st edition of SUKMA, which spanned 8 days and featured three racing disciplines across two venues in Kuching.
“Terengganu has proven once again to be a powerhouse in cycling. Over the past 8 days, we have nearly dominated all the podiums in the events we competed in,” said Datuk Razali Idris, the main stakeholder of the Terengganu cycling squad at SUKMA Sarawak 2024. “However, this success did not come overnight. It is the result of the collective efforts of the Terengganu State Sports Council, the coaching staff, and even the parents of the athletes who have shaped them into the competitors they are today.”
Datuk Razali expressed his hope that the winning momentum would continue beyond SUKMA, especially for athletes making their final appearances due to age restrictions. “I hope these athletes will secure spots as national athletes or at least be part of the national backup squad,” he added.
For the record, the 5 gold medals were contributed by the men’s road cycling and BMX teams. The 3 silver medals came from the men’s criterium, individual downhill, and men’s cross-country Olympic (XCO) events. The 4 bronze medals were won by the women’s road cycling team, men’s BMX, and men’s cross-country Olympic (XCO).
Kedah emerged as the second most successful cycling team at SUKMA Sarawak 2024, with a total of 10 medals: 5 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze. Perak followed in third place with 4 medals: 2 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze.
