The host team Stingrays RC (in purple jerseys) attempts to break through the defense of Politeknik Malaysia Kota Bharu during a group stage match at the UMT 25th Anniversary Rugby Tournament, held at the Tengku Muhammad Ismail Sports Complex UMT, Kuala Nerus, Terengganu.
Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) celebrated its 25th anniversary in a distinctive way by hosting its first-ever university rugby tournament, organized entirely by students from local institutions of higher learning.
The one-day event at the Tengku Muhammad Ismail Sports Complex featured eight invited teams competing in 20 matches.
Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (in red jerseys) was among the visiting teams from outside Terengganu that joined the competition, adding intensity to the UMT 25th Anniversary Rugby Tournament at the Tengku Muhammad Ismail Sports Complex.
The initiative set a new benchmark for the UMT Student Representative Council (MPP), supported by the university’s Sports & Recreation Centre, in proving their ability to deliver a tournament on par with external organizers.
Tournament director Nurul Syazwani Norazman, a Bachelor of Tourism Management student, described the experience as a turning point.

“This is a new experience for us as organizers, having previously only participated as players. Although we started with eight invited teams, the inclusion of squads from Pahang and Kelantan raised the bar. With the positive feedback received, we are confident about staging a larger tournament later this year,” she said.
The event also provided valuable match time for Stingrays RC, UMT’s sole rugby club, helping the team maintain competitive momentum.

Meanwhile, Mohd Ad Deen Al Haj Zulkefly, team manager of KPTM Bullets RC from Kuantan, emphasized the importance of making the tournament an annual fixture due to the scarcity of rugby competitions in the East Coast.
“We were willing to travel from Kuantan because rugby events are rare in this region. Despite being organized entirely by UMT students with no prior technical experience, they executed it flawlessly. Credit must go to their efforts, and we hope this becomes a yearly event, with categories for IPT and women’s rugby introduced,” said Mohd Ad Deen, who also serves as an academic and examinations officer.
In the inaugural edition, Tuetowear RC emerged champions after defeating IPG KB from Kelantan with a commanding 30–0 victory. The host team, Stingrays RC, finished as Plate runners-up after falling 5–21 to Dungun Rugby.
The four-wheel-drive (4×4) extreme sports scene in Terengganu has been recognised as a new tourism product with the potential to boost the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign.
The newly launched Terengganu Tourism and Cultural Events Calendar (COE) 2026 marks a significant milestone for the state as it officially includes the Terengganu 4×4 extreme motorsport event as one of its 13 flagship programmes in support of the national Visit Malaysia Year 2026 (TMM 2026) campaign, which begins next year.
The recognition comes on the back of strong momentum within Terengganu’s off‑road motorsport scene throughout the year. The fifth edition of the Terengganu 4×4 Merdeka Challenge, held in Bandar Baru Kuala Nerus last August, successfully gathered 152 competition vehicles and 304 participants from across the country—setting a new benchmark for positioning the sport as a viable tourism product for the state.
Adding to this momentum, Terengganu‑based team GG 4×4 recently made history on the international stage by securing third place at the Rainforest Challenge Grand Final 2025, which concluded in Gua Musang, Kelantan on 10 December.

“Four‑wheel‑drive extreme sports in Terengganu have a long history spanning several generations, and today it has been elevated as one of the state’s tourism products, marking a new chapter for the community and for all 4×4 enthusiasts in Terengganu.
“Personally, I do not see this recognition as something exclusive to us as organisers. The 4×4 ecosystem in Terengganu thrives because of the collective cooperation between various clubs and communities who work together to elevate this sport as a tourism product for the state,” said Muhammad Muzzammil Mokhetar, the principal stakeholder behind the Terengganu 4×4 Merdeka Challenge since its inception in 2023.
Muzzammil, who also serves as President of the Ummah Four‑Wheel Drive Sports Club (UT4x4), added that the event’s continued success is the result of strong collaboration with local clubs such as Kelab Terjoh! 4×4 Kuala Terengganu and GG 4×4, each contributing technical expertise and organisational experience.
As part of ongoing efforts to attract more visitors to the state and to promote off‑road motorsports among recreational communities, UT4x4 and several local 4×4 clubs are now planning a 60‑kilometre expedition through the dense forests of Hulu Terengganu.
Thirteen flagship events have been listed in the Terengganu Tourism and Cultural Events Calendar (COE) 2026 as part of efforts to support the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign.
The launch ceremony was officiated by the Chairman of the State Committee on Tourism, Culture, Environment and Climate Change, Datuk Razali Idris, who emphasised that strategic cooperation between the Terengganu State Tourism and Culture Department, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), and Tourism Malaysia will significantly strengthen the state’s contribution to the Visit Malaysia Year 2026 campaign through a diverse range of tourism products from the east coast.
For the record, the Terengganu 4×4 Merdeka Challenge 2026 is one of 13 main events and more than 100 supporting programmes announced during the ceremony, which was held at a local hotel.
A Land Rover Defender Series 3 88, nearly half a century old and still running mostly on its original components—including a 2.5‑litre turbo‑diesel engine—successfully endured the gruelling Rainforest Challenge Grand Final 2025, which concluded in Gua Musang, Kelantan on 10 December 2025.
GUA MUSANG, KELANTAN – The Binjai Bongkok–Bukit Payong–based GG 4×4 team delivered an inspiring performance at the Rainforest Challenge (RFC) Grand Final 2025, securing a podium finish after 11 days of demanding off-road competition, all while relying on a vehicle that is nearly half a century old.
Despite finishing third in the R3 Production category, team manager Azili Safeei expressed strong satisfaction with the durability and capability of their Land Rover Defender Series 3 88, which managed to compete against far more modern and powerful machines, including those fielded by international teams.
The Terengganu-based GG 4×4 team secured third place at the Rainforest Challenge Grand Final 2025 during an awards ceremony held at Dewan KESEDAR, Gua Musang, on 10 December 2025.
“It wasn’t easy for us to complete this race. We faced mechanical issues as early as the first day in Gua Musang, which caused us to lose valuable points,” said Azili, who is also a former RFC competitor.
“But securing a podium this year, even in third place, is already a significant achievement after battling teams from Poland and top local contenders. At the very least, we end this racing season with something we can be proud of.”
The pairing of Tengku Khairul A. Rahman (left) and co-driver Muhamad Nasrul Aiman Mohd Azili guided the GG 4×4 team through 11 days of extreme off-road competition, finishing third in the R3 category of the 28th Rainforest Challenge Grand Final 2025.
Team driver Tengku Khairul A. Rahman remains confident that their veteran machine still has the capability to return for the next international edition of the RFC.
“In reality, speed is not the main factor that determines the champion in the RFC. Experience and race strategy are the key elements, and today we proved that,” he said.
He also credited the technical crew and team management for their relentless support, highlighting the mechanics who worked day and night to keep the vehicle running, as well as the management team who maintained strong coordination with sponsors throughout the season. Tengku Khairul was partnered with co-driver Muhamad Nasrul Aiman Mohd Azili, representing the Terengganu-based team.

The race, which began on 29 November in Sungai Buluh, Selangor, and concluded in Gua Musang, Kelantan, spanned 11 days and featured three categories: R1 (Prototype), R2 (Modified Production), and R3 (Production). A total of 22 competition vehicles from Russia, Poland, Latvia, and Malaysia took part.
In the R3 category, the championship was won by the Polish team led by driver Rafal Stanislaw Osmolski and co-driver Kamil Mariusz Majerczyk. Second place went to Malaysia’s Otai Racing Team, driven by Kamarozaman Jusoh with co-driver Muhd Khairy Kamid, both well-known figures in the off-road motorsport scene. GG 4×4 secured third place.
In the R1 category, Russian teams dominated the podium by taking first and second place, while a Malaysian team from Sabah clinched third place, outperforming two other Russian teams that finished fourth and fifth.
For the R2 category, only two teams competed this year, with Team 107 from Johor taking first place and Cameron 4×4 finishing second.

GUA MUSANG, KELANTAN – After nearly a week battling through the dense jungles of Gua Musang, the GG 4×4 team faces just three more days to complete the grueling 46 special stages (SS) of the Rainforest Challenge (RFC) Grand Final 2025, which began on December 2.
Armed with a Land Rover Defender Series 3 88 that is nearly half a century old, the team has proven that age is no barrier when competing against modern, high-powered machines in this internationally recognized off-road championship.
Team manager Azili Safeei, a former Rainforest Challenge competitor, now leads GG 4×4 in their quest for glory at the RFC Grand Final 2025.
“So far, we’ve only had to concede one DNS at SS16 due to technical issues with our vehicle. That’s a record we’re proud of, considering several other teams have faced far worse setbacks,” said team manager Azili Safeei, who leads the squad from Marang, Terengganu.
He added that team morale remains high, especially among the mechanics who have worked tirelessly to repair damages under extreme and unpredictable conditions.
The veteran Land Rover Defender Series 3 88, nearly half a century old, remains the pride of Terengganu’s GG 4×4 team as they chase podium honors in the RFC Grand Final 2025.
“We are proud of our veteran machine that continues to carry momentum this season. Looking at the current situation, we believe we still have a chance to reach the podium,” Azili said.
With unpredictable weather expected to add further challenges, Azili noted that opportunities remain evenly balanced among all competing teams. The RFC Grand Final 2025 has drawn 22 entries, including international challengers from Russia, Poland, and Latvia, alongside strong local representation.
Gua Musang, Kelantan serves as the final battleground of the Rainforest Challenge Grand Final 2025, which concludes on December 10.
The RFC Grand Final 2025, scheduled to conclude on December 10, marks the final leg of this year’s global off-road racing series, which has spanned multiple countries across continents.

The Terengganu International GPx4 Offroad Challenge featured two race categories — Litecore Open and Camping Body Hardcore — during its two-day event held from 3–5 October 2025 at Belukar Bukit, Hulu Terengganu.
Terengganu has once again proven its status as Malaysia’s premier off-road motorsport hub with the successful staging of the Terengganu International GPx4 Offroad Challenge, which drew 174 drivers and 87 4×4 machines from across the country to Belukar Bukit for a two-day adrenaline-fueled showdown.
Backed by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) through Tourism Malaysia and the Terengganu State Government, the event’s growing prestige and strong turnout have prompted organizers to consider elevating the competition’s scale in future editions.
One of the standout moments came from the Land Rover Defender Series 3 88, fielded by Team GG 4×4, which captured attention with its performance during the off-road race.
The two-day Terengganu International GPx4 Offroad Challenge 2025 successfully drew a large crowd, including enthusiastic local residents from Belukar Bukit, Hulu Terengganu.
The diverse terrain of Belukar Bukit added significant value to the event, offering natural challenges that elevated the prestige of the two-day race held from 3–5 October 2025.
“Terengganu is a natural playground for 4×4 enthusiasts, offering diverse terrains that provide unmatched challenges compared to other states,” said Muhammad Muzammil Mokhetar, Race Director and President of Ummah 4×4 Sports Club (UT 4×4). “We also have a wealth of scenic locations across districts that could serve as future venues, aligning perfectly with our vision to position this event within the broader framework of sports tourism.”
The sentiment was echoed by Terengganu State Tourism Exco, Datuk Razali Idris, who highlighted the event’s socio-economic impact on rural communities.
“This race not only attracted a significant number of participants from outside Terengganu, but also brought tangible benefits to the local economy, even in remote areas,” he said. “It reinforces our strategy to develop Terengganu as a sports tourism destination and supports our momentum heading into Visit Malaysia Year 2026, now just two months away.”

Datuk Razali also commended the organizers for attracting international participation, further cementing the event’s potential on the global off-road calendar. He officiated the closing ceremony and presented prizes to the winners on the final night.
The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), through Tourism Malaysia, was among the strategic partners of the Terengganu International GPx4 Offroad Challenge 2025, which was held over two days from 3–5 October 2025 at Belukar Bukit, Hulu Terengganu.
The event was jointly organized by UT 4×4 and Kelab Terjoh 4×4 Terengganu, both based in Kuala Nerus. The two clubs previously made waves with the successful Merdeka 4×4 Challenge 2025 held in August, further solidifying their reputation in Malaysia’s off-road motorsport scene.
Malaysia Festival of Speed 2025 (MFOS 2025) encompasses multiple motorsport championships, with rally being one of the featured competitions in its second edition, held at the Sepang International Circuit from 15–17 August 2025
In motorsport, triumph and defeat are part of the journey. But when a legitimate victory is seemingly “taken in broad daylight,” it sparks more than disappointment—it raises serious concerns about the integrity of the competition.
That was the bitter reality faced by local rally outfit R&R Sport Speed Garage, who were denied a third-place finish in the M3 category at the Malaysia Festival of Speed 2025 (MFOS 2025), held on August 17 at Sepang International Circuit. Due to a race result mix-up, a team from a different category was mistakenly awarded the podium spot, sidelining drivers Dinie Nazmi Abd Rahman and Mohd Nazam Shah Sulaiman from their rightful place.
A screenshot of a WhatsApp conversation showing competing teams questioning the official race results of the Malaysia Festival of Speed 2025 (MFOS 2025), which concluded on August 17, 2025, at the Sepang International Circuit.
The incident has stirred unease among competing teams and motorsport observers, many of whom are now questioning the professionalism and credibility of the organizers—especially given MFOS’s reputation as one of Malaysia’s premier motorsport championships and a stepping stone to higher-level competition.
The confusion reportedly stemmed from the organizers’ decision to announce provisional results due to time constraints, rushing the podium ceremony before final verification. This created logistical chaos in the service park and limited teams’ ability to file formal protests. Despite early attempts by R&R Sport Speed Garage to raise concerns diplomatically, the error went uncorrected until after the ceremony.
Dinie Nazmie Abd Rahman (second from right) and teammate Mohd Nazam Shah Sulaiman are drivers for the R&R Sport Speed Garage team, who competed in the M3 category at the Malaysia Festival of Speed 2025 (MFOS 2025), which concluded on August 17, 2025, at the Sepang International Circuit.
“This isn’t the first time our team has faced such issues, though from different organizers. But how long must teams stay silent? Especially when it happens at an event as significant as MFOS, which is considered the pinnacle of national motorsport,” said Dinie Nazmi Abd Rahman, when contacted more than 48 hours after the incident occurred.
He added, “Mistakes like this shouldn’t occur at events backed by national-level motorsport bodies. If stakeholders could set aside ego and accept early feedback, this could’ve been resolved without tarnishing anyone’s reputation—including the sponsors who support these teams.”
Dinie emphasized that every competing team is a partner to the organizers, and any lapse in integrity could impact future participation.

Updated list of official results released by the organizers of the Malaysia Festival of Speed 2025 (MFOS 2025), following the conclusion of the event on August 17, 2025, at the Sepang International Circuit.
“Teams invest heavily—financially and emotionally. Entry fees are paid, vehicles are prepared, and sponsors are involved. Don’t kill the spirit of rallying, especially for the next generation of drivers.”
Although the corrected results have since been announced, awarding Dinie and Nazam their championship points, the moment on the podium is one they’ll never reclaim.
Dinie Nazmi Abd Rahman (right) and teammate Mohd Nazam Shah Sulaiman made their first appearance in this season’s rally calendar after being forced to withdraw at the last minute from the opening race in Jempol, Negeri Sembilan due to health issues.
“Winning or losing is part of racing—but let it be with dignity. That dignity belongs not only to the drivers but to the organizers as well. Our entire team, including our sponsors, is deeply disappointed,” Dinie concluded.
Despite the setback, R&R Sport Speed Garage remains focused on completing the final two rounds of the Malaysia Rally Championship 2025, with eyes firmly set on a season podium finish.
R&R Sport Speed Garage is fielding a Proton Satria Neo 1.6 race machine in their pursuit of championship glory this season.
For the record, Dinie Nazmi has been a prominent figure in Malaysian rallying since 2008, while Mohd Nazam Shah has made his mark since 2004. R&R Sport Speed Garage is not only a competitive racing outfit but also a key player in nurturing new talent—offering race car rentals and team management services to aspiring drivers nationwide.
The Eastcoast Rallying x Piston Project team successfully completed the race despite suffering a tire failure during the second round of the 2025 Malaysia Rally Championship, held in Sepang on 17 August 2025.
With just five kilometers left to the finish line and a blown tire threatening their chances, Eastcoast Rallying x Piston Project delivered a gutsy performance to secure second place in the M3 category of the second round of the 2025 Malaysia Rally Championship, held as part of the Malaysia Festival of Speed (MFOS) at the Sepang International Circuit.
The team’s Honda Jazz GE had already endured a punishing setback during Special Stage 3 (SS3), where mechanical failure under scorching heat forced the crew to carry out urgent repairs with limited equipment. Despite the odds, driver Muhamad Roni Risman and co-driver Ir. Ts. Muhammad Syakirin Razaki pressed on, determined to close the time gap and complete every remaining stage through the rugged oil palm plantation terrain near Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
This marked the debut collaboration between Eastcoast Rallying and Piston Project—a team with a strong reputation on both local and international tarmac circuits. For Roni, who also owns Piston Project, the decision to continue racing on a damaged tire was a calculated risk.
Ir. Ts. Muhammad Syakirin Razaki, behind the wheel of a Honda Jazz GE, was the key figure for Eastcoast Rallying x Piston Project as the team faced a critical tire failure that nearly cost them a podium finish in the M3 category during the second round of the 2025 Malaysia Rally Championship, held in Sepang on 17 August 2025.
“We had no choice. Either we quit early for something uncertain, or we finish this race with pride,” said Roni. “Our pace gave us a shot at the podium, but continuing with a blown tire was a gamble. We knew any time penalty at the finish line could cost us.”
Syakirin, a seasoned rally navigator and stakeholder in Eastcoast Rallying, described the decision as “madness,” but necessary.
“No racer wants to end with a DNF. We had to fight to avoid that outcome,” he said. “For rally drivers, whether here or abroad, the podium is a bonus. The real prestige lies in finishing the race—no matter how battered the car is. That’s the true challenge of rallying.”
The Eastcoast Rallying x Piston Project team, fielding a Honda Jazz GE, successfully completed the race despite suffering a tire failure during the second round of the 2025 Malaysia Rally Championship, held in Sepang on 17 August 2025.
The M3 category was ultimately won by Hasrin Tahir and Hendra Eryawan of the Bawang R Tune Mannol Rally Team, driving a Proton Satria Neo 1.6. Eastcoast Rallying x Piston Project claimed second place in their first outing as a joint team, while third went to R&R Sport Speed Garage, piloted by veteran Dinie Nazmi Abd Rahman and teammate Mohd Nazam Shah Sulaiman.
The Malaysia Rally Championship continues with rounds three and four scheduled for later this year, with Asahan, Melaka set to host the season finale.
The VTF Championship is organized in four series per year, with the first three editions held in specific zones, leading up to the final showdown, officially branded as the Grand Final Varsity Track & Field (Grand Final VTF).
The Varsity Track & Field (VTF) Championships stand as a prestigious annual competition, showcasing a wide range of track and field disciplines at a national level. Organized by the Sports Section, Strategic Planning Division of the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT), VTF serves as the ultimate battleground for student-athletes from public and private higher education institutions to compete and earn recognition on both domestic and international platforms.
A Gateway to Global Competition
Beyond national glory, VTF plays a pivotal role in securing spots for athletes at the World University Games, organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Previously known as “Universiade,” the FISU Games are the highest stage for university athletes worldwide, first held in 1959. The upcoming 32nd edition is set to take place in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany, in July 2025, offering Malaysian athletes a golden opportunity to showcase their talent on a global scale.
Origins and Evolution
In a 2024 interview with a sports news agency, Dr. Hanafiah Ayub, Deputy Secretary of the Sports Section, Strategic Planning Division of KPT, revealed that VTF was initially introduced to expand domestic athletics competitions for university athletes. Over time, the championship has gained credibility, with every recorded result recognized by Malaysia Athletics Federation (MAF)—the governing body for athletics in the country.
Competition Format
The tournament consists of four editions per year, divided into three zonal competitions before culminating in the Grand Final Varsity Track & Field (Grand Final VTF)—the ultimate showdown where the nation’s best athletes battle for supremacy.
Historic Venues
Since its inception in 2022, VTF has been hosted at several significant locations:
2022:
The inaugural edition wrapped up at Mini Stadium, National Sports Council, Bukit Jalil.
2023:
The second edition concluded at University of Malaya Stadium, Kuala Lumpur.
2024:
Terengganu took center stage for the third edition, held at UniSZA Stadium, Kuala Terengganu, from November 8 to 10, 2024, marking another successful chapter in the championship’s history.
Looking Ahead
With VTF continuing to evolve as a vital talent pipeline, expectations remain high for Malaysia’s university athletes. As the 2025 season unfolds, all eyes will be on the next generation of track and field stars, pushing their limits in pursuit of excellence.
Tengku Muhammad Ismail Rugby Stadium, located at the Terengganu State Sports Complex in Kuala Nerus, serves as the final destination after a three-series tour in search of new talents for the Terengganu rugby squad, in preparation for SUKMA 2026.
After creating a sensation by clinching silver and bronze medals at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA Sarawak 2024), the Terengganu rugby squad has decided to kickstart their preparations early, with two years to go before SUKMA 2026 unfolds in Selangor. This timely move takes advantage of the state’s abundant young rugby talent, nurtured through local development programs starting from school age.
Not wanting to let this latent talent go to waste, the Terengganu Rugby Association (PRNT) alongside the Terengganu State Sports Council (MSNT) as the main stakeholders have successfully attracted 105 participants through four Talent Identification (TID) programs conducted across various districts in Terengganu.
The Terengganu rugby squad’s talent search tour has also attracted female rugby players, in preparation for the SUKMA 2026. The tour concluded at the Tengku Muhammad Ismail Rugby Stadium.
Terengganu has a large pool of young rugby talent nurtured from school development programs.
The Terengganu rugby squad’s talent search tour, which concluded at Tengku Muhammad Ismail Rugby Stadium, also drew interest from female rugby players. This initiative is part of the team’s preparations for SUKMA 2026.
This development indirectly sets a positive benchmark for the stakeholders of the rugby development program, particularly involving several schools in Terengganu that can produce new talents to be showcased at higher levels.
“Some of these participants are willing to travel long distances to join the rugby talent identification programs, and some even came back for subsequent selections after not being chosen in the earlier rounds. There are even participants from outside the state of Terengganu trying their luck.
“We are well aware and have also received early feedback from various parties, including the participants’ parents, to hold another series of selection programs since some prospects had to focus on the Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) exams, which will conclude in February 2025,” said Muhammad Azmeen Mohd Yusoff, MSNT’s sports coordinator.
The Terengganu rugby squad’s talent search program, in preparation for the SUKMA Selangor 2026, was conducted through four tour series across various districts in Terengganu.
Meanwhile, team manager Enche Mohd Amirulmukminin Sulaiman expressed his gratitude to the rugby teams, especially former students who continuously support the rugby development programs in their respective areas and strive to position their trainees to represent Terengganu at the SUKMA 2026 in Selangor next year.
“Without the collaboration between the Terengganu State Sports Council through the Sports Technology Division (BTS MSNT) as the technical selection partner and the district-level rugby associations or the sports teachers in their respective schools, including Atadalta Consultancy as the program sponsor, we wouldn’t have been able to gather as many as 105 participants from across the state.
A representative from Atadalta Consultancy (left), a strategic partner in the Terengganu rugby squad’s new talent search program in preparation for SUKMA Selangor 2026, presents a souvenir to Che Mohd Zulkarnain Abdul Wahab (right), Deputy President of the Terengganu Rugby Association. The event, held on December 22, 2024, at the Tengku Muhammad Ismail Rugby Stadium, Terengganu State Sports Complex in Kuala Nerus, was also attended by A. Zulkifli Mohamad (center), Manager of the Terengganu State Sports Complex.
“I can say that this is the largest number of participants since I started managing this rugby squad in 2017,” said Enche Mohd Amirulmukminin Sulaiman, who made his first appearance as team manager at SUKMA Perak 2018.
Next, the rugby squad’s training program is scheduled to start in the first quarter of this year at the Tengku Muhammad Ismail Rugby Stadium, Terengganu Sports Complex in Kuala Nerus.
In addition to planning the rugby sports development and training program, MSNT and PRNT will also assist the rugby squad trainees with housing placements, schooling, and other welfare needs for these high-performance athletes.

Rugby training program for students in Kuala Nerus at Tengku Muhammad Ismail Rugby Stadium enhances team readiness for district and state levels at the Terengganu schools sports council (MSST) championships.
In a spirited effort to strengthen local rugby development programs, 10 teams from various schools and higher learning institutions in Kuala Terengganu and Kuala Nerus converged for a friendly match at the Tengku Muhammad Ismail Rugby Stadium, Terengganu State Sports Complex. This exciting event brought together nearly 400 players, along with their management teams, to celebrate the sport and foster unity.
Thanks to the unwavering support from the Terengganu State Education Department (JPNT), Terengganu State Sports Council (MSNT), and the Terengganu State Rugby Association, this event set a new benchmark in providing young rugby players with the invaluable opportunity to play in a prestigious stadium for the first time.
The Tengku Muhammad Ismail Rugby Stadium, located in the Terengganu State Sports Complex, Kuala Nerus, is fully utilized to provide young talents, even those still in school, with the real experience of being in a rugby stadium.
Mohd Nazri Mohd Ramli (wearing sunglasses), the rugby coach of Sekolah Menengah Sains Sultan Mahmud (SESMA).
Participating teams included Sekolah Menengah Sains Sultan Mahmud (SESMA), Sekolah Berasrama Penuh Integrasi Batu Rakit (Brains), Maktab Rendah Sains Mara Kuala Terengganu (MRSM KT), Kolej Vokasional Wakaf Tembesu (KVWT), and Institut Pendidikan Guru Malaysia Kampus Dato’ Razali Ismail (IPGKDRI).
“Choosing the Tengku Muhammad Ismail Rugby Stadium was a shared decision to ignite the excitement of our young rugby trainees, who are students from around the district,” said program director Mohd Nazren Dasir, also a teacher at Sekolah Menengah Sains Sultan Mahmud (SESMA).
“Many of these students have been part of their school’s rugby development programs since the age of 13 and have continued to advance to higher levels. I also want to express my gratitude to JPNT, MSNT, and the Terengganu State Rugby Association, along with several other parties, for realizing this initiative for the development of sports among school students,” he added.
Nizam Kamal, the team manager of the SUKMA Sarawak 2024 7s rugby squad, was also present to show support for the school-level rugby development program in Kuala Nerus.
Nizam Kamal, representing the Terengganu State Rugby Association (PRNT), echoed his thanks to JPNT and other supporters, including parents, who have consistently backed the rugby development programs from school level onwards.
“There are no obstacles from PRNT in empowering any rugby development program in the state. It is our responsibility to support and assist, leveraging all available facilities for any party. We must continually and fully support all efforts for rugby development programs, particularly from schools, which are the largest grassroots stakeholders in the nation,” he stated.
“Furthermore, it is our duty to identify young talents as part of our efforts to provide them with opportunities to compete on higher platforms,” added Nizam Kamal, who also serves as the team manager for the Terengganu 7s rugby squad at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA).
For the record, grassroots rugby development programs from schools across Terengganu have been ongoing for many years. However, since 2016, participation from several schools has been steadily increasing, leading to the establishment of more rugby teams.
Terengganu has once again secured their place in the quarterfinals of the 40th edition Agong Cup, overcoming Perlis with a tight 29-26 victory in the final group stage match at Kompleks Tuanku Syed Putra, Kangar on October 5, 2024.
Terengganu is on the path to reclaiming the 40th edition Agong Cup title after securing a 29-26 win over Perlis at Kompleks Tuanku Syed Putra, Kangar.
In a rain-soaked match, Muhammad Danial Noor Hamidi scored the first try just 13 minutes in, with Mohamad Faris Pead converting to put Terengganu up 7-0. Hamidi scored another try at the 27th minute, bringing Terengganu to 15-0.
Perlis fought back with a try from Enesi Waqanisau, ending the first half 15-5. In the second half, Perlis, led by coach Mohd Hafiz Zainon, ramped up the pressure, scoring three tries and conversions, but couldn’t surpass Terengganu, who sealed the win with two more tries and conversions. The final whistle from referee Nik Mohd Ramadhan Nik Abdullah confirmed a 29-26 victory for Terengganu.
Khairul Azhar Shaarani takes the helms as Terengganu’s Head Coach for 40th Agong Cup 2024.
“Praise be to Allah, the rain created an even playing field for both teams. It wasn’t an easy victory for us as the visiting team, especially against Perlis, who had strong home support and quick attacks under coach Mohd Hafiz Zainon. Credit to Perlis for their fierce performance.
“Our quarterfinal against the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) on Saturday won’t be easy. We’re aware of ATM’s growing strength over the past three years. I have high hopes for my players, many of whom have faced ATM before. But we can’t afford to be complacent,” said Terengganu’s head coach, Khairul Azhar Shaarani.
Next, Terengganu faces the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) in the quarterfinals at Stadium Ragbi Tengku Muhammad Ismail, Kuala Nerus on October 12. This season marks the first under coach Khairul Azhar Shaarani.
Last year, Terengganu narrowly missed the semifinals, losing to the eventual champions, the Royal Malaysia Police. Terengganu last won the Agong Cup in 2019, defeating Sabah 25-24 in a thrilling final.
The 40th edition of the Agong Cup Rugby Championship 2024 has been finalized, featuring 9 teams in a 15-a-side format. This year’s tournament has seen a few last-minute withdrawals, but the competition remains fierce.

They are gearing up for their opening match against the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur this Saturday at Tugre Arena, Sungai Buloh, Selangor.

The Terengganu aquatics contingent at the Sarawak 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) has etched its own place in history by securing medals for the first time in the team’s participation since SUKMA Perak 2018. After a grueling five-day medal hunt at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Center in Petra Jaya, Terengganu emerged with a remarkable achievement.
In the diving events, Terengganu secured third place overall and ninth place in the overall aquatics events, placing them among the top 10 states participating in the 21st edition of SUKMA. This milestone marks a new era for the East Coast contingent.

The diving events yielded a total of five medals. Uzlifatil Jannah Ashraf contributed two silver medals in the women’s 1-meter springboard event, while Ikmal Abror Ibrahim and Muhammad Haris Mohd Rezal secured silver in the synchronized men’s 3-meter springboard.
Additionally, Ilyssa Ixora Imran and Uzlifatil Jannah Ashraf clinched three bronze medals in the women’s synchronized 10-meter platform, and Muhammad Haziq Muizzudin Mohd Asri and Uzlifatil Jannah Ashraf earned bronze in the mixed synchronized 3-meter springboard. Muhammad Haris Mohd Rezal also secured bronze in the men’s 1-meter springboard.

Terengganu also fielded two swimmers in the swimming events. Abdul Karim Jaafar Azhar, aged 16 (born on October 15, 2008), successfully qualified for the finals in the 100m butterfly and 100m backstroke. Meanwhile, female swimmer E Mun Hayley, now 18 (born on May 29, 2006), advanced to the finals in the 800m freestyle and 1500m freestyle.
Although neither swimmer reached the podium, their commitment to training and representing Terengganu in the country’s premier sporting event deserves recognition.
It’s worth noting that Terengganu lacks comprehensive aquatic training facilities, leading some swimmers to train and study outside the state, with some even attending schools as far away as Sabah.
Aquatics, a medal-rich discipline, offers substantial opportunities for podium finishes. SUKMA Sarawak 2024 features a total of 53 medals up for grabs in aquatic events, making it one of the most competitive sports categories. The dominance of certain states in the overall medal tally is evident, with at least 45 medals at stake for each color.

Since 2017, Terengganu’s primary focus has been unearthing local talent to compete in aquatic venues at SUKMA. Pioneers like Ikmal Abror Ibrahim, Mohammad Haziq Muizuddin Mohd Asri, and Nur Aiman Daniel Azman were among the first five divers identified during talent scouting in 2017. While two of them withdrew from the training program, Mohammad Haziq Muizuddin Mohd Asri, then just 8 years old, stood out as one of the youngest qualifiers in the preparatory diving squad.
In 2018, the first batch of divers embarked on an extensive five-month training journey in China, fully funded by the Terengganu State Sports Council (MSNT), the main sponsor.
Additionally, young talents like Muhammad Arfa Zikry Muhammad and Muhammad Aeriel Riezqi Abdullah, both aged 11, were identified in 2023, further strengthening Terengganu’s diving prospects.

“Terengganu has proven once again to be a powerhouse in cycling. Over the past 8 days, we have nearly dominated all the podiums in the events we competed in,” said Datuk Razali Idris, the main stakeholder of the Terengganu cycling squad at SUKMA Sarawak 2024. “However, this success did not come overnight. It is the result of the collective efforts of the Terengganu State Sports Council, the coaching staff, and even the parents of the athletes who have shaped them into the competitors they are today.”
Datuk Razali expressed his hope that the winning momentum would continue beyond SUKMA, especially for athletes making their final appearances due to age restrictions. “I hope these athletes will secure spots as national athletes or at least be part of the national backup squad,” he added.

The 4 bronze medals were won by the women’s road cycling team, men’s BMX, and men’s cross-country Olympic (XCO).

The most prestigious 15-a-side rugby championship season in the country, eagerly awaited by every local rugby team, is set to kick off its first match on September 7, 2024.
Terengganu stands as the sole representative from the east coast, continuing their campaign in the 40th edition of the championship. They have been drawn into Group B alongside last year’s runners-up, Federal Territory of Putrajaya, Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, and Perlis.
Adding to the excitement, DTYM Yang Dipertuan Muda Terengganu, Tengku Muhammad Ismail Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, has graciously agreed to rejoin the Terengganu Rugby team. His return follows a stellar performance last season, where he led the team to a resounding 72-06 victory over Selangor in the opening match.

In the previous edition, Terengganu’s journey to the semi-finals was halted by a narrow defeat, losing by just ‘1 try’ to the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM). Qabil Irfan Azlan, a young motorcycle racer born in Kuala Terengganu and also the champion of the FIM MiniGP World Series 2023, is gearing up for a new challenge as he prepares to compete in the Spanish Motorbike Championship (ESBK) Moto 4 in April, even during the fasting month.
According to his father, Azlan Abd. Rahman, 48, although Qabil, 12, doesn’t have any specific targets set, he remains optimistic that his son can compete with more experienced riders.
Azlan explained that he and Qabil will be in Spain for almost a month to participate in the ESBK Moto4, only returning to Terengganu a few days before Aidilfitri.
“We will be observing Ramadan in a foreign land this time, but these are sacrifices that need to be made if he wants to further his career in the world of motorcycle racing.
“Qabil will undergo early preparations to adapt to the machine and track conditions before the actual race at the Jerez Circuit on April 6th and 7th,” he said when interviewed.

Azlan further emphasized that Qabil’s participation in the ESBK Moto4 serves as an early exposure for the young rider, who gained fame as the champion of the FIM MiniGP World Series 2023 in Valencia.
“Competitors in this category are more experienced as they have the appropriate equipment in terms of machinery and track for training compared to Qabil.
“Nevertheless, this is the right time to prove his abilities, and I hope everyone will pray for Qabil’s safety and success,” he added.
In the upcoming race at the Jerez Circuit, Qabil will be racing for the Spanish team, VHC Frando Racing, and is scheduled to participate in pre-season tests on March 16th and 17th.
The first stage of the race will take place at the same circuit on April 6th and 7th, followed by the next stage on June 1st and 2nd at the Valencia Circuit.

The rally team based in Kuala Terengganu, Eastcoast Rallying, kicked off this season’s racing calendar with great significance after dominating the top spot in the P10 category during the two-day action of the Rally Sprint X-One Championship, which concluded last Sunday at Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS), Serdang.
Adding to the excitement for the team, the Honda Jazz GE vehicle, fully tuned by R&R Sports Speed Garage as the technical partner of Eastcoast Rallying this season, proved to be the best bet to gain momentum on the first day of the race, leading by a margin of 12 seconds for an overall time of 21 minutes and 21 seconds, ahead of the Mitsubishi Evo 8 rally car owned by the Marcars Motorsports team in the P12 category, driven by the national rally sports legend, Karamjit Singh, along with co-driver Deveender Singh.
Racer Ir. Ts. Muhammad Syakirin Razaki (second from the left) and team co-driver Amir Izham (third from the left) of Eastcoast Rallying alongside the team crew after securing first place in the P10 category of the Rally Sprint X-One, held over two days from February 24th to February 25th, 2024, at Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS), Serdang.
On the second day of the race on the fully tarred circuit, the scorching hot weather posed an additional challenge for Eastcoast Rallying to complete the race with a time of 12 minutes and 4 seconds, accumulating an overall time after two days of racing of 33 minutes and 25 seconds.
This result placed Eastcoast Rallying in first place, creating a gap of 7 seconds to deny the Magnax Racing Team the second place, with the EZZ Machine team securing the third place with a time of 34 minutes and 1 second in this P10 category.
Adding to the excitement at the start of this season, Eastcoast Rallying, driven by Terengganu native Ir. Ts. Muhammad Syakirin Razaki alongside co-driver Amir Izham from Kota Bharu, also secured the third place overall in the two-wheel drive (2WD) category, achieving a double podium finish, providing additional momentum for the team based in Kuala Terengganu to continue improving on their performance record from last season.
The Honda Jazz GE vehicle (on the right), driven by the Eastcoast Rallying team from the East Coast, emerged as the champion in the P10 category alongside other race vehicles that also secured podium finishes. All these racing machines received technical expertise from R&R Sports Speed Garage.
“Alhamdulillah, it’s a good momentum at the start of the season for Eastcoast Rallying, where our mission this year is to improve our performance record compared to last season.
“On the first day of the race, we didn’t expect our small CC capacity machine to be able to overtake the Mitsubishi Evo 8 driven by national rally legend Karamjit Singh. It was a great motivation to finish the race on the second day for the team.
“We hope this success momentum doesn’t stop here, as we are still aiming for several podiums throughout this season,” said Eastcoast Rallying driver Ir. Ts. Muhammad Syakirin Razaki.
Meanwhile, for Eastcoast Rallying co-driver Amir Izham, the long-established compatibility with team members was the main factor contributing to securing the podium this time.
“The technical challenges posed by the circuit provided by the organizers were not an easy track to interpret by the co-driver to the team’s mechanics who handle the vehicle under considerable pressure.
“However, the established compatibility since 2017 among us gave Eastcoast Rallying the advantage to achieve the podium this time,” said Amir Izham, the co-driver of the East Coast Rallying team who also founded the team in 2017. Amir Izham is also a certified PADI scuba diving instructor and was once crowned the overall champion of the Malaysia Rally Championship (Junior Category) 2012 alongside driver Dinie Nazmi Abd Rahman.
In the records of last season’s Rally Sprint X-One stage, East Coast Rallying completed the P10 category race with an overall time of 37 minutes and 42 seconds after navigating through 3 track races (Leg) on the fully tarred circuit, covering 9 special stages (SS) for a total distance of 24.43km.
For this season’s edition, the third staging of the Rally Sprint X-One event will feature 8 special stages (SS) covering a total distance of 24.43km over two days of racing for 5 focus categories and 6 other contested categories.
The first round of the Rally Sprint X-One for the year 2024 features 8 special stages (SS) covering a total distance of 24.43km over two days of racing. The event includes competitions in 5 focus categories and 6 other contested categories.

No participation fee is levied on each participant, and racing equipment is also provided by the Terengganu Canoe Association
The adrenaline-pumping Monsun Ombak Challenge, known for its adrenaline-pumping kayak races that conquer the roaring waves of the northeast monsoon or the transition season, will once again captivate enthusiasts at the Pulau Kekabu Recreational Park in Marang. The sixth edition, slated to run from February 29 to March 2, 2024, promises to deliver another thrilling spectacle.
Continuing its tradition of offering lucrative cash prizes to winners, this year’s edition, like its predecessors, waives any participation fees for contestants. Moreover, all racing equipment is provided by the Terengganu Canoe Association, the event organizer.
President of the Terengganu Canoe Association, Dzulkafli Abas, also serves as the technical director of the Monsun Ombak Challenge.
“It’s undeniable that since the inception of the event, no participation fees have been charged, which has been a cornerstone of our event’s success. Additionally, participants need not worry about bringing any racing gear, as everything is meticulously arranged by us,” said Dzulkafli Abas, President of the Terengganu Canoe Association and the technical director of the Monsun Ombak Challenge since its inaugural edition in 2015.
The sixth edition of the competition will showcase the ‘Sit On Top Racing (SOTR)’ kayak, a first in the history of the event. In previous editions, the ‘dancer classic perception’ kayak was the vessel of choice for the 200-meter race.
Six categories will be contested, including two exclusive to Terengganu, while the remainder is open to participants from both domestic and international arenas.

The International Rally Championship Malaysia 2024 (MIRC 2024) has been announced to return and color the exhilarating world of rally car racing after 5 years of silence without any race organization.
Enhancing the prestige of the internationally recognized race, sanctioned by the national motor sports governing body Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia (KBS), the participation of rally drivers from China, Thailand, and Indonesia is expected to challenge the local drivers who are increasingly shining in this region.
The first round of the race will take place over three days in Kuantan, Pahang from March 8th to March 10th, 2024, before heading to the second round destination in Melaka from June 7th to June 9th, 2024.

Johor will host the third round of the rally races scheduled for September 6th to September 8th, 2024, before Perlis becomes the final destination to close the race curtain scheduled from December 6th to December 8th, 2024.
The rally championship, organized by the Millennium Motorsport Adventure Club (MMAC) under the leadership of Dato’ Seri Mohamad Khafey Ikhwan Abdul Latif, paints a different picture of race organization this time compared to previous ones, with various carnival-like side events taking place to attract the public to experience the rough racing sport.
For the record, the last time a rally car race was held domestically was during the Tri-Nation Sprint Rally, which saw only 12 racing cars participating. It took place from March 23rd to March 24th, 2019, in Tanamera, Sungai Buluh. That same year, the annual Malaysian Rally Championship (MRC) was also suspended due to financial issues.
Since its establishment in 2017, East Coast Rallying has been adding colors to the local rally racing scene, driven by Kuala Terengganu native Ir. Ts. Muhammad Syakirin Razaki (left) alongside navigator Amir Izham from Kota Bharu, Kelantan Darul Naim.

“It’s a great honor for us, as a small team from the east coast, to compete on the championship stage of Rally Sprint X-One for the second edition. We missed the opportunity to participate in last year’s inaugural event due to technical issues with our team,” said Ir. Ts. Muhammad Syakirin Razaki, who has been involved in rally racing since 2017 and was crowned champion in the overall Malaysian Rally Championship (Junior Category) 2012 alongside Azmeer Yusri Yusof.

“Yes, it’s a tremendous honor for me, as I have been with East Coast Rallying since 2017. I will do my best and hope luck is on our side. The unpredictable weather is not a hindrance for us, as we have raced in extremely challenging situations before. If it rains, it could work to our advantage, but we’re not hoping for worse conditions,” said Amir Izham, also the co-founder of East Coast Rallying with extensive experience in off-road motorsport since 2008. Amir Izham is also a certified PADI scuba diving instructor and was crowned the overall champion of the Malaysian Rally Championship (Junior Category) 2012 alongside rider Dinie Nazmi Abd Rahman.
