The Varsity Track & Field (VTF) Championships stand as a prestigious annual competition, showcasing a wide range of track and field disciplines at a national level. Organized by the Sports Section, Strategic Planning Division of the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT), VTF serves as the ultimate battleground for student-athletes from public and private higher education institutions to compete and earn recognition on both domestic and international platforms.
A Gateway to Global Competition
Beyond national glory, VTF plays a pivotal role in securing spots for athletes at the World University Games, organized by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Previously known as “Universiade,” the FISU Games are the highest stage for university athletes worldwide, first held in 1959. The upcoming 32nd edition is set to take place in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany, in July 2025, offering Malaysian athletes a golden opportunity to showcase their talent on a global scale.
Origins and Evolution
In a 2024 interview with a sports news agency, Dr. Hanafiah Ayub, Deputy Secretary of the Sports Section, Strategic Planning Division of KPT, revealed that VTF was initially introduced to expand domestic athletics competitions for university athletes. Over time, the championship has gained credibility, with every recorded result recognized by Malaysia Athletics Federation (MAF)—the governing body for athletics in the country.
Competition Format
The tournament consists of four editions per year, divided into three zonal competitions before culminating in the Grand Final Varsity Track & Field (Grand Final VTF)—the ultimate showdown where the nation’s best athletes battle for supremacy.
Historic Venues
Since its inception in 2022, VTF has been hosted at several significant locations:
2022:
The inaugural edition wrapped up at Mini Stadium, National Sports Council, Bukit Jalil.
2023:
The second edition concluded at University of Malaya Stadium, Kuala Lumpur.
2024:
Terengganu took center stage for the third edition, held at UniSZA Stadium, Kuala Terengganu, from November 8 to 10, 2024, marking another successful chapter in the championship’s history.
